In the city where art reins king, you don’t have to look far for unique, hand-spun shopping. Be it vintage hunting, boutique browsing or rifling through a bookshop, this city was built for quirky take aways.

Frances May

A favourite among Portland’s creative scene and owned by a grandmother/ granddaughter team, this curated boutique stocks some of fashion’s most credible names including Acne Studios and A.P.C. as well as jewellery and accessories by beloved local designers. Check out its window displays as they change every few months to showcase some of Portland’s hottest artists.

Buffalo Exchange

There are plenty of vintage and thrift stores in Portland ,but Buffalo Exchange is great because clothing and accessories are bought, sold and traded locally with store customers. Make time to head here and you’re likely to uncover some rare finds including denim, leather and even designer labels – just be prepared to do a bit of rummaging.

Everyday Music

It’s practically Record Store Day 365 days a year in Portland, but Everyday Music has the largest collection of vinyl in the city. This warehouse-style space is filled from floor to ceiling with what’s likely to be most albums known to man – or at least it feels like it. You’re sure to find something you love whether that’s Stevie Wonder or Pearl Jam.

Tender Loving Empire

Much like the city it’s set in, TLE is a home for all things creative. Born out of a desire to help the local community, this popular shop not only sells some of the finest homeware, art and Oregon-brewed beer but is also a record label. There are a few stores dotted around the city, including at the airport for when you need to grab last-minute gifts.

Union Way

Perched across the street from Ace Hotel Portland, this mini shopping arcade is lined with light wooden panels and finished with rustic beams overhead. Great for a little stroll, it’s home to Portland’s hiking boots staple Danner, Japanese denim specialists Self Edge and Spruce Apothecary for all your organic beauty needs.

Beam & Anchor

Inspired by the Pacific Northwestern coast, Beam & Anchor is a haven of eclectic lifestyle accessories sourced locally and housed in a converted 7,000sq ft warehouse in industrial North Portland. It showcases an array of handcrafted ceramics, textiles and jewellery, so leave some space in your luggage to take it all home.

Powell’s Books

Located in the heart of the Pearl district, Powell’s City of Books is the largest independent new-and-used bookstore in the world. A spin through the multiple floors and nine colour-coded rooms is a right of passage for any discerning bibliophile, and no visit to Portland would be complete without it. Be sure to check out their calendar to scope out the free readings which go on every day of the week.
