After days spent getting lost in Marrakech’s labyrinthine streets or haggling for that must-have kaftan in the souks, there’s nothing better than retreating back to your own private riad to laze in dappled sunlight or sip drinks on the rooftop terrace. Here’s our favourite Moroccan stays where you can do just that.

Riad Mena

Originally a privately owned home, Riad Mena now offers a tranquil escape a stone’s throw from the main square, Jemaa el-Fnaa. Six spacious rooms surround a courtyard filled with hanging vines, verdant plants and blooming flowers, while traditional decor includes colourful tiled floors, metal lanterns and antique Berber rugs. After a day spent winding through the twisting alleys of the Medina, retreat to Riad Mena’s heated pool before heading to the terrace for drinks under the stars.

El Fenn

Live like royalty in this renovated former palace, where colonnaded balconies, sun-dappled courtyards and views of the towering Koutoubia Mosque make for a decadent stay. Wander around the sprawling complex dotted with riads to find a 12m heated pool, boutique shop, orange tree grove and yoga deck. Admire the hotel’s contemporary art collection before soaking in your riad’s deep bathtub and gazing across Marrakech from your private terrace.

Dar Darma

This intimate riad in the ancient Moqf district oozes maximalist Moroccan style. While the architecture centres around wood-panelled walls, ornately carved doorways and decadent columns, interiors are filled with bold colours, handcrafted ceramics and leafy plants. Stay in the Blue Suite for a peaceful haven, or the Orange Suite for velvet opulence.

L'Hôtel Marrakech

A labour of love by British designer Jasper Conran, L’Hôtel Marrakech is an elegant sanctuary hidden in a secluded corner of the Medina. Rove between orange blossom and jasmine trees in the courtyard to find the 10m lap pool or dine in the lemon-striped salon, where floor-to-ceiling French windows open out onto the fragrant garden.

Riad Jardin Secret

While retaining original features and style, fashion duo Cyrielle and Julien have injected this traditional Moroccan house with niche touches and minimalist flourishes. Spend days getting lost within the magical souks before retreating to the airy comfort of Riad Jardin Secret. Dine on its bright-pink roof terrace, where vegan food is served against a backdrop of the bustling Medina.

Le Riad Berbère

Minimalist interiors and relaxed decor give way to period craftsmanship at Le Riad Berbère. The paved courtyard is centred around an octagonal pool, which shimmers in the dappled sunlight streaming through banana palms and citrus trees. A private hammam and massage room is perfect for relaxing throughout the day. Come evening, climb up a private staircase for drinks on your bedroom’s balcony.
