There’s no denying that Sydney’s good looks and great weather form the ideal backdrop for ‘the good life’. Days are long, nights are balmy and the beaches are out of this world. The city’s obsession with aesthetics has its benefits: the dining scene is sleek and chic, and local fashion is so good that Sydney-based designers have exhibited at PFW (Kym Ellery, we’re looking at you.) Here we explore the city’s neighbourhoods and how we’d want to spend 24 hours in each of them.

Bondi is the undisputed beach hub of the city, where surfers and yogis gather to eat raw fish rolls and boutique shops and restaurants abound. The creamy sands here are a siren call for Sydneysiders just as much as they are for tourists, where a self-sustaining mini-universe exists beside mineral-green waves. Then, there’s Inner West, an area that has seen much of the city’s social movements, where even if you’re not particularly enamoured with veganism, socialism or punk rock, you’ll be hard-pressed to avoid falling in love with the place. The CBD, Central Business District, home to the Opera House, was a corporate tourist area in the 90s – when large tourist shops and many-floored restaurants dominated the scene. That’s all changed now and in their place you’ll find some of the cities best boutique hotels as well as restaurants, bars and shops that could keep you entertained for days. In Northside you’ll find a quieter side to the city, with less crowded beaches and a more laid back atmosphere. And if you’ve been in Sydney for far too long and need a break, we’ve also written about some of our favourite weekend escapes.
