While Lisbon’s colourfully tiled shopfronts and bright buildings are ever so Instagrammable from street level, the best way to see this brilliantly hued city is from above. Even better if you’re looking at it perched on one of the many rooftop bars dotted around the maze of streets, cocktail in one hand, cheesy croquette in the other. But with so many to choose from, which ones should you hit on your trip? We did the hard research for you, and here are a few of our favourite Lisbon rooftop bars.

Park The hip hangout

You could stroll past this multi-storey carpark and be none the wiser that a plush green garden bar sits on the top – save for the faint sound of music wafting from above. A true hidden treasure, escape the sweltering streets by taking the lift to the fifth floor and walking up a further two flights of stairs. A mirage-like scene of palm trees, potted plants and a 180-degree view of Lisbon awaits, including the Santa Catarina Cathedral bell tower almost in touching distance. As the DJ plays jazz, old-school hip hop, or ups the ante with house beats as darkness falls, a young, creative crowd kick back on wooden furniture, lured by next-level cocktails, gourmet burgers and jugs of sangria. This is our favourite kind of urban legend.

Lost in Esplanada Bar The colourful hideway

Tucked down an alley and behind a restaurant, you’d only find Lost in Esplanada if you knew it was there. A little quieter than most, this leafy courtyard bar is a world away from the busy streets of Lisbon, overlooking a patchwork of suburban streets. Order a jug of sangria (to share or not share) and relax after a big day of sightseeing.

Terrace Ba, Bairro Alto Hotel The luxe lookout

It’s hard to have a care in the world at this breezy oasis above the heart of Lisbon’s busy city centre. Located on the sixth floor of this popular five-star hotel, well-heeled locals and upmarket travellers come for the chilled atmosphere and panoramic views of the River Tagus. Lisbon’s iconic Golden Gate-style 25 April Bridge perches on the horizon, truly coming to life after dark as its lights twinkle against the jet-black sky. Ice-cold juices, business lunches and post-shopping cocktails are order of the day here. It’s grown up, but the cosy feel, wicker chairs and comfortable cushions add to the city’s undeniable laid-back charm. Capacity is limited so go well before sunset to guarantee a table.

Topo The local favourite

What this tiny spot lacks in space, it makes up for in epic views over the city. Don’t be put off by the derelict building entrance – just head up to the top floor where you’ll find the open-air bar, with theatrical bartenders waiting to pour you a picture-perfect Aperol spritz to go with that view. At the weekend, watch salsa dancers in the square below – and join in if you’re feeling brave.

Rooftop, Hotel Mundial The cool character

Take tips from the Portuguese and sprawl across the grass, benches and tile slabs at this popular viewpoint. A good stop-off at any time of day, it truly comes to life at sunset, when locals grab a beer or bottle and show you exactly how post-work drinks should be done. Fondly dubbed ‘Adamastor’ after the statue of a fearsome mythological character outside, there’s a real sense of old-meets-new here. Lie back and take in views of the river and the Cristo Rei – Lisbon’s monument to Christ – while listening to blissfully relaxed chatter. If the crossed-leg lifestyle isn’t for you, experience the same view with table service at Noobai café next-door.

Pharmacia The pre-dinner spot

It might not be on an actual rooftop, but it fills all the other prerequisite – it’s up high atop a steep hill (a challenge to walk down tipsy, by the way), there’s plenty of sunshine to be had on the astro-turfed patio and tanned waiters will bring you endless cocktails. Best of all, once you’ve enough mojitos, you can head inside for dinner in the quirky restaurant.
