With the groundbreaking news that a direct flight will launch between the UK and Australia next year, we look at the new flight routes we’re most excited about for 2017. Now, where to next…

1. British Airways: London Heathrow to New Orleans

Launched March

Four flights a week now connect the Deep South city to the UK with the launch of the first ever transatlantic flight for New Orleans. Hello, beignets, whisky and jazz.

2. Norwegian: London Gatwick to Seattle

September 2017

Trailblazing the way for affordable long-haul travel, Norwegian is adding flights from London to Seattle to its ever-expanding repertoire. We also love them for their free in-flight wifi.

3. Delta Airlines: JFK to Lisbon

End of May 2017

Arriving just in time for your summer travel plans, Delta is offering direct flights between JFK and Lisbon – the perfect excuse to escape the city and head to the Iberian Peninsula.

4. Alaska Airlines: LA to Havana

Launched January

The eighth US carrier to offer flights to Cuba, Alaska Airlines now provides a welcome link between the golden coast and Havana’s candy-coloured streets.

5. Norwegian: Edinburgh/Cork/Shannon to New York

2017

There’s no stopping Norwegian, who are set to launch flights from Edinburgh, Cork and Shannon to New York for as little as £69 one way. Planes will land at Stewart International Airport approximately 70 miles north of New York City – but at those prices we’re not complaining.

6. Qatar Airlines: Auckland to Doha

Launched February

This direct flight connecting New Zealand to the Middle East is the world’s longest flight at 16 hours and 35 minutes, covering a whopping 9,032 miles. Not for long though – Singapore Airlines plans to launch a flight between Singapore and New York at 9,500 miles in 2018.

7. easyJet: Bristol to Pula, Croatia

27 May

Striking coastlines, Roman ruins and the deep-blue waters of the Istrian Peninsula beckon from Bristol with easyJet’s new direct flights to Pula, making Croatia a viable option for West Country folk looking for a weekend getaway.

8. British Airways: London Heathrow to Santiago

Launched January

British Airway’s direct flight between London Heathrow and Santiago marks the first ever route between the UK and Chile, which will no doubt become the latest “in” South American city.

9. Cathay Pacific: Barcelona to Hong Kong

2 July

Connecting two of the world’s most vibrant cities, we can’t imagine anything more glorious than going to sleep in Barca and waking up in HK. Thanks Cathay.

10. Qantas: London to Perth

March 2018

This absolute game changer is the first direct flight between the UK and Australia and will take just under 17 hours, with economy fares starting at £1,095.
