The Journey…

Porto

It’s hard not to fall in love with Porto’s vibrant riverfront and laid-back vibe, where labyrinthine streets are lined with grand merchants’ houses and colourful tiled churches. Book into the hilltop Yeatman Hotel, one of more than 975 hotels worldwide in the curated FINE HOTELS & RESORTS programme, where a wine bottle-shaped pool looks out over Porto’s rooftops. From noon check-in (when available) to complimentary breakfast for two, every benefit helps you make the most of your trip. Explore the surrounding neighbourhood of Gaia, largely undiscovered by tourists and home to the city’s famous cellars – and a trip to Porto is about nothing if not sampling its namesake liquor. Head to The Yeatman’s two Michelin-starred restaurant for dinner, where you’ll be treated to €85 to spend on refined local fare and award-winning wine.

Nazaré

Portugal really comes to life when you step of the beaten track. This 200km journey takes you through forests and along coastlines to the popular seaside town of Nazaré, an Atlantic gem renowned for its surfing. Check into the Vale d’Azenha Hotel where the charm of a rustic Portuguese villa has been updated with a dose of minimalism. From here, hike up to the lighthouse at Praia de Norte for killer views before returning to the hotel for bacalhau à brás (a Portuguese speciality of salt cod).

Cascais / Ericeira

Next up, head to the picturesque towns of Cascais or Ericeira to hone your surfing skills. Cascais has some of the region’s best restaurants nestled in 19th-century buildings built by Portuguese nobility – don’t miss Furnas do Guincho or Moules & Co. for local seafood. Alternatively, sandstone clifs are met by Atlantic waves in Ericeira, making it a favoured holiday spot among in-the-know Lisboetas. Skip central Fishermen’s Beach and drive to Ribeira d’Ilhas for surfing lessons, or sunbathe on unspoiled Praia de São Lourenço beach.

Lisbon

About 300km south of Porto, Lisbon’s hills are studded with pastel-hued villages such as Edenic Sintra. Spend the last days of your trip in the capital, treating yourself to a five-star stay at the 19th-century Lapa Palace overlooking the Tagus River. You’ll be welcomed with a complimentary room upgrade (when available) to the garden or palace quarters when you book through the FINE HOTELS & RESORTS programme. Enjoy complimentary breakfast for two served in the frescoed salon throughout your stay. After a leisurely 4PM check-out, go for a spin along the 25 de Abril suspension bridge towards neighbouring Setubal, where beachfront restaurants provide the perfect backdrop to reflect on your adventure – and plan the next one.
