Eastern Market

Located in the heart of DC’s Capitol Hill neighbourhood, Eastern Market is an ideal place to take a break from monuments and museums. Much loved by the community that surrounds it, the market first opened in 1805, but moved to its current location in 1873. Originally confined to a beautiful 19th-century brick building, the market has since spilled out onto the surrounding blocks, playgrounds and streets. Spend an afternoon delving into art, crafts and homely food.

Capitol Hill Books

Right by Eastern Market is Capitol Hill Books, a used book store that makes up for its small size in incredible character. The dry-humoured owner, Jim Toole, has filled every corner, nook and cranny (including the bathroom) with books he’s picked up at various auctions, book sales or from donors. With his own handwritten notes guiding you through the store (think: “Recommended from rehab by Lindsay Lohan!” and “Vampires (suck) here!”), this much-loved shop is not to be missed.

Georgetown

A breath of fresh air beyond the city, Georgetown is a small university town with views of the Potomac River and beautifully lined storefronts. With a huge variety of independent stores, Georgetown has become known for its shopping. Take a break at Georgetown Bakery, home of the TV show DC Cupcakes.
