TO DO

Climb a volcano

The best way to take advantage of being in volcanic country is to climb one. Unless you’re an experienced trekker or climber, however, it’s advisable to set your sights on one of the more manageable climbs. At 2,500m, Pacaya Volcano is one of the more accessible summits to scale. There are several day trips from Antigua for about $60, where you can climb this active volcano and then toast marshmallows on the still-hot rocks.

Learn Spanish

Antigua is one of the best places in Central America to study Spanish, and you’ll find many excellent language schools are scattered throughout the town. Whether you want just a day of lessons to brush up on your Spanish or are looking for something more intensive, these schools offer short and long-term courses to suit any schedule. With low prices as well as fun activities available, this is a great way to get to know the real Antigua and its people.

Gorge on coffee and chocolate
