Old (Coptic) Cairo
Coptic Cairo, situated by Khan el-Khalili, is the oldest part of the city. The area has been inhabited for more than 2000 years and serves as the centre of the Coptic Christian community. Highlights include the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra synagogue – Egypt’s oldest. Roman remains and cobbled streets mean this area feels like it was designed for ambling.
Along with mummies, sarcophagi and many other ancient relics, the Egyptian museum holds some of the objects taken from Tutankhamun’s tomb, including a death mask made of solid gold. The museum is open from 9am to 5pm daily and faces Tahrir Square, the site of the 2011 revolution.
