Climb to Ljubljana Castle

This 16th-century castle sits on a hilltop overlooking the city, offering fantastic views from the Lock Tower, especially at sunset when the red-roofed churches and houses of the old town are bathed in golden light. The museums in the grounds are good value for money, giving insight into the country’s intriguing history, with the Museum of Puppetry a particularly charming highlight. It’s a 15-minute climb to get there with tickets costing €7.50, but if your legs are weary from a day’s exploring you can catch the funicular for an extra €2.50. Once up there, indulge in a €30 three-course lunch at fine-dining spot Strelec.

For an unforgettable market experience, amble down to the open market for a culinary tour to tickle your tastebuds. Stalls run by more than 100 restaurants from around the world line Pogacarjev Trg in the old town, and there is plenty of room for relaxed socialising with a glass of wine or craft beer as you take in the tempting smells, bold colours and friendly ambience. The grub is reasonably priced and it’s free to attend, making this an unmissable event every Friday from late March through to the end of October.

National Gallery of Slovenia

Art lovers are spoilt for choice in Ljubljana, but if you only have time to visit one gallery, make it this one. Slovenia’s most highly regarded fine art is displayed across two floors, with paintings by Ivana Kobilca, Jurij Subic and Pavel Kunl among our favourites. There are Gothic statues, bronzes and copies of medieval frescoes to admire too. Tickets cost €5.
