One of the most interesting ways to explore the island is by kayak, which you can hire from one of the many shops in the town. Kayak along the sea to discover numerous fish, sting rays, pelicans, and if it’s the season, the island’s famous pink flamingos, or head further north of the beach end of the island and kayak down in the mangroves, where the waters are green, the air humid, and if you’re lucky, you may spot a crocodile bathing on the shore.
Between June and September on Isla Holbox, one of the key draws is the whale-shark watching. Several companies offer this so it’s wise to shop around to find the best deal and book the day before. Take a sea-sickness tablet in case of choppy seas, and head out in the morning. Aside from swimming alongside one of the world’s most majestic beasts, you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins, turtles, and manta rays along the way.
Holbox is also renowned as a great spot for kitesurfing, and the Holbox Kiteboarding School offers individual and group lessons, no matter what level you’re at. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the scenic surroundings, plentiful with pelicans, flamingos and sting rays, all while keeping active.
Isla Holbox is so small an island, it can easily be explored by golf cart, and virtually no cars exist. It’s a relatively cheap and fun experience to hire one, and cruise around the island with all its bumps and muddy clay puddles.
