Start your evening off right with drinks at Base. Located next to Clérigos Tower in Porto’s historical downtown, the bar is an open air venue, rendering it the perfect spot for a sunset tipple. Enjoy a glass of sparkling rosé or opt for a zingy Mojito.
This is one of Porto’s best-loved bars, so come for generously poured mixers and a buzzing atmosphere. Perch in one of the large upholstered chairs if you’re here in the evening, or arrive after 1:30am when the bar turns into a club, and catchy sing-a-longs have you heading straight for the dancefloor.
Serious night owls, this is the place for you – nights at this club normally start between 2:30 and 3am. Stay upstairs in the lounge area for cocktails and wine, or delve downstairs for the club’s famed dancefloor. The funky interior, designed by noted Portuguese interior designer Paulo Lobo, is themed around cubes, reflecting the club’s name.
There’s no want for choice at The Wine Box, with more than 450 types of wine from the most diverse Portuguese regions served by glass. Skip the vineyard tour and opt instead for a port tasting paired with small bites, including huevos rotos (broken eggs) and Iberian ham.
Aduela is the trendiest, hippest spot in town. It has reasonable prices, good wine and a lively atmosphere. They’ve recently added an esplanade with an olive tree – one of the city’s symbols. People work the bar during the day but by 8PM you can’t see for young people standing with a glass of red wine in hand.
Baixaria is the place to come if you want to drink good mojitos while listening to samba or a casual jam. It is located in one of the most vivid night spots in town. From there you can stroll into another five or six bars nearby – though none are quite as cheerful as Baixaria.
Despite what this bar’s name may suggest, Plano B is often plan A for most people. During the day the venue acts as a coffee house and art gallery, but Plano B moonlights as a retro bar and club in the evening. Hang upstairs for sofas and a more chilled vibe, or head downstairs for two dance floors and international DJs.
