TO EAT

Le Cartet Brunch

At Le Cartet, sit at long communal wooden tables under hanging light bulbs and mingle with the city’s artsy crowd. The menu is known for its dreamy selection of overflowing platters and our favourite has got to be the healthy brunch, piled high with in-season fruit, local cheddar topped with figs, goat’s cheese with pesto and organic ginger granola topped with cashews, blueberries, and yoghurt. Want to satisfy your sweet tooth? We’re obsessed with the toasted banana and coconut bread and the berry-stuffed crepes with coulis. You won’t leave hungry.

Beauty's Brunch

A trip to Montreal would not be complete without a visit to Beauty’s Luncheonette. For each of the 74 years that this 50s-style diner has been running, owner Hymie Sckolnick has greeted customers at the door every morning. Don’t miss the to-die-for Oreo milkshake or the fresh bagels provided by the legendary St Viateur Bagel shop up the street – be sure to get them piled high with lox.

Olive et Gourmando Brunch

Home to the yummiest granola and baked goods in the city, O + G is a top spot for girly brunches and family get togethers. The quirky-cosy décor makes this restaurant feel like an adorable countryside café despite its prime location in the heart of Old Montreal. Get your nosh in here before exploring the unique boutiques dotted throughout the surrounding streets.

Leméac Brunch

If you’re looking for a swanky brunch location, Leméac is a winner. The gorgeous bar and patio are the perfect backdrop for the indulgent menu of caviar-crowned blinis, scrumptious eggs benny, and most importantly, the restaurant’s world-class ‘pain perdu’ for dessert.

Les Enfants Terribles

Translating to mean ‘The Terrible Children’, you’ll definitely want to let out your naughty side for this one; baked mac and cheese and the chorizo mini pogos are so worth breaking your diet for. The restaurant’s newest location is also the highest eatery in Montreal – it’s located on the 44th floor of the Place Ville-Marie building and has all-glass walls and a gorgeous terrace, so show up in time for sunset and watch the city light up in pink and orange hues.

Joe Beef

Montreal chefs are known for their prowess when it comes to surf and turf and those responsible for Joe Beef are no exception. Co-owned by star restaurateurs David McMillan and Frédéric Morin, this restaurant is the sweetheart of Montreal’s food scene. The unpretentious duo of chefs only has one goal in mind: producing delicious, down-to-earth French meals. No Insta-eats here – just fresh, homegrown food such as the selection of Canadian oysters, lobster spaghetti and hanger steak on the menu, all of which will please even the most discerning of diners. No wonder it’s Momofuku’s David Chang’s favourite restaurant. Be sure to book ahead.

L'Express

The crème de la crème of this city’s timeless spots, L’Express has delighted Montrealers for years. With a menu stacked with French classics such as duck foie-gras terrine, warm goat’s cheese salad and a divine croque monsieur, this one is unmissable. And don’t even think about leaving without trying the maple profiteroles.

Jatoba

Jatoba’s chic take on zen design is the perfect complement to the establishment’s top-notch Asian fusion dishes. Sample the wood-charcoal-grilled shrimp, soft-shell crab with Chinese spices or the sustainably sourced bluefin tuna.

Toqué!

With a heavy focus on using local ingredients from the surrounding countryside, Toqué! provides an assortment of beautifully arranged, terroir-based meals. If you’re feeling daring, give the tasting menu a whirl, as every dish is a surprise (and each one is more impressive than the last). Going à la carte? Try a meal of fresh tuna tartare followed by cavatelli with seasonal vegetables. For dessert, the milk chocolate and lime mousse and the matcha-tea meringue are definite hits.

L'Gros Luxe

You can’t get any more Montreal than this. The overflowing bowls of bacon poutine, ‘pimp your grilled cheese’ options and fried cookie dough are mouthwatering if not a little heart-attack inducing. Pair with one of the house’s custom cocktails (try ‘the hurricane’) and you’re in for a serious treat.
