Lima’s famous Mercado Indio (Indian market) might be a problem for souvenir junkies. With countless shops selling traditional Peruvian jumpers, hats, scarves, tablecloths and cushions, it’s almost impossible to leave here without buying something bright and colourful. Aside from clothing and textiles, the market is also a great place to purchase paintings in the authentic Cusqueña style, handmade jewellery and novelty knick-knacks such as Incas versus Conquistador chess sets. The prices are generally already low, but haggling is a must here.
Owned by a British expat, Artesanias Las Pallas has long been known as one of the best upmarket artisan shops in the city. Located in a gorgeous Republican-style house, a visit is an experience even if you leave empty handed – though that will be hard. Packed with unique, colourful paintings, high-quality textiles, ceramics and intricate jewellery, like the Mercado Indio you’ll want to buy everything.
For something a bit different, head to Larcomar, Lima’s coolest and most modern shopping centre. Located on the cliffs of Miraflores, it’s retail therapy with a seriously impressive view. With dozens of restaurants, bars and stylish boutiques, as well as a cinema, bowling alley and pool hall, Larcomar is one of the few places you can admire the crashing Pacific waves and flying paragliders while you shop until you drop.
Lima is a foodie’s paradise, but you don’t have to be in one of the city’s restaurants to get your fix. On Saturday mornings Parque Reducto in Miraflores hosts Bioferia, the best organic farmer’s market in Peru. With countless stalls selling fresh coffee, organic juices, artisan cheeses and vats of fat olives, as well as some lovely natural cosmetics, this is the perfect place to enjoy an early weekend breakfast. Just make sure you visit on an empty stomach.
