There's nowhere quite like Fogo Island, the largest island off the shore of Newfoundland and Labrador in eastern Canada. Whether you live here or are just visiting, you cannot fail to be struck by its captivating beauty. The expansive landscapes and rich history make for the perfect travel destination; it's a place to visit time and time with endless journeys of discovery and new experiences beckoning you along the way.
With a population of just 2,500, Fogo Island is home to some of the friendliest people in the world, who are quick to welcome visitors with open arms and warm smiles. They only need to meet you once and they will forever call you a friend, filling your trip with happy memories of nourishing home-cooked meals and local music. It is impossible to feel like a stranger on Fogo Island.
The traditional culture won't be familiar when you first arrive, however. Don't be surprised if you get 'screeched in' - a tourist ritual involving kissing a fish to make you a true 'Newfie' (Newfoundlander) - while lucky ones may be treated to a traditional 'jiggs' dinner of salt beef and boiled vegetables. Take care when driving too, as wild caribou herds roam the island.
These photos show just a small snapshot of the beauty of an island where dramatic contemporary architecture meets the rugged natural world. But it is just a snapshot - you need to see the real thing.
