The Most Unusual Airbnbs in Puerto Rico

The Most Unusual Airbnbs in Puerto Rico

Bed down in a treehouse amid the palms, drift off in a bubble dome or enjoy a dreamy night’s sleep in a woodland cabin: these are the quirkiest self-catering stays across the island.

In partnership with

It
would be an understatement to say that Airbnb has
revolutionised Puerto Rico’s accommodation offering. Not only
have its self-catering stays added a considerable £19 million to
the island’s economy, they’ve also provided a much-needed income
stream for many Puerto Ricans recovering from the double blow of
Hurricane Maria and the pandemic. And, while the platform’s growth
inevitably comes with certain repercussions, we can’t help but be a
little in awe of the creative boltholes popping up across the
island thanks to its influence. From a renovated vintage Airstream
caravan to a rattan-chic bubble dome, these are our favourites.

Seven beautiful Puerto Rico rentals to book for an island
adventure

A treehouse rental in Puerto Rico

Treehouse of Life

Immerse yourself in nature by booking a night or three at this
incredible treehouse, perched in a 30-year-old flamboyan
tree high in the Rosario jungle in the town of Hormigueros. Climb
the roped bamboo staircase to the childhood tree fort of dreams,
complete with an open-air living space, minibar and four-poster bed
to flop into. Disclaimer: you’ll be sharing this earthy getaway
with the resident birds, bats, geckos and coquí (native frogs) that
also call this tropical slice of the world home – which we think
only adds to the fun. Just remember to pack binoculars (and
mosquito repellent – just in case).

A glitzy bathroom in a Puerto Rico rental

Romantic Suite

High-octane romance reigns supreme at this ocean-view suite in Rincón. Enjoy a king-size,
four-poster bed, tub for two and private plunge pool overlooking
the surrounding palms and towards the sprawling Rincón mountains.
Sporting floor-to-ceiling windows and designed with great attention
to detail (think brass bathroom taps, wicker furnishings and a
well-equipped contemporary kitchen), it’s the perfect base for a
romantic getaway.

The bedroom in a treehouse airbnb puerto rico

La Botánica Treehouse

If we were to quit our job and buy a one-way ticket to Puerto
Rico in pursuit of the beach yogi’s dream, we’d hope to live in
this modern-bohemian treehouse in San Juan. All cream, wood-panelled
walls and polished cement floors, decorated with antique
furnishings, it’s the ideal home-from-home for aesthetes looking
for a calming space. Enjoy your morning coffee in the hammock on
your very own floating deck, then drift down to the communal garden
for yoga at the wellness centre next door.

A cosy cabin in Puerto Rico

Hacienda Paraíso

Enveloped by towering bamboo, this rustic wooden cabin in Las
Piedras offers a down-to-earth Puerto Rican farmstay in the woods.
Renovated in 2020, the cosy space has wood-panelled walls and
timber floorboards, plus modern additions that bring a touch of
opulence – like the freestanding tub in the bedroom. Whisk open
your white-linen curtains to a private balcony with views over the
bamboo fields, or mosey into town to catch a movie at the local
cinema or savour a farm-fresh meal cooked over an open fire at
Bacoa Finca +
Fogón
.

The interior of a quirky dome-shaped rental

Boquerón Dome

Ever imagined you’d spend the night sleeping in a bubble? Nor
had we, until we came across this domed home in Cabo Rojo, where
chic design details like hanging rattan lanterns, candyfloss-pink
sofas and a vintage freestanding fridge join a huge circular bed.
Make the most of your surroundings by taking a trip to the famous
Las Salinas pink salt flats nearby, or simply settle in for an
evening of homemade dinner beside your small, fairy-light-adorned
pool.

The exterior of the cabin rental

Casa Alpina

Although it’s located just outside artsy Sabana Grande, this
tiny A-frame cabin feels worlds away from
civilisation. Tucked among the trees, it’s a peaceful retreat at
which to enjoy mountain views and verdant walks. Due to the remote
location, there’s no WiFi or cable TV here, which means you’ll have
all the more time to spend in the great outdoors (or enjoying the
in-house board games and DVDs). Follow the trail downstream for a
quick dip in the river, then watch the sunset over the palms from
your private balcony.

A Puerto Rico airstream

Rooftop Airstream

This sleek, 1976-built Airstream elevates the glamping experience to a
whole new level. Located in a rooftop house near Ponce, the caravan
contains all you need for a comfortable stay, including a king-size
bed, Nespresso coffee machine and bright, well-equipped kitchen.
But it’s the tiny home’s outdoor space that really caught our
attention – you’ll love its flop-worthy outdoor beanbags, barbecue
and huge freestanding tub that’s just made for a night of
palm-fringed stargazing.
