Berlin’s Five Best Cafes

The Curious Pear heads to Berlin to source the city’s best cafés.

Berlin.
The eternally cool city that begs you to stay out all
night, buy things you don’t need (blue ram’s skull, anyone?) and
try lots of things you probably shouldn’t. We’ve visited the Grey
City several times over the last few years, and our inability to
fully understand Berlin is probably what keeps us coming back for
more.

It has it all – streets steeped in history, endless bicycle
lanes, a suitably intimidating art scene and of course, cafés. Lots
and lots of cafés. Clearly, food and drink take precedence when we
are away and there is no shortage of places in this city for us to
maroon ourselves for an hour or two.

On our most recent trip to Berlin, we found more glorious food
spots than ever before, with some of the best coffee we’ve had in a
long time. It seems to us that now is a better time than ever to
visit Germany’s capital, and here to accompany you on your jaunt is
our pick of Berlin’s five best cafés to visit right now.

Silo Café

‘Coffee, Food, Booze’, what more could we ask for? Berliners
love their bikes, and Silo pays homage to their two-wheeled
companions with a mounted vintage bicycle on the back wall. You’ll
find all the customary hanging light bulbs, woody finishings and
brick walls in this Australian café, but the outstanding coffee and
delicious brunches set it apart from other spots. Try their baked
eggs, which come with chewy sourdough bread baked locally in
Kreuzberg, or their stack of fried brioche with orange blossom
poached apples. Their coffee selection changes with the harvest
seasons, and each cup is brewed with loving devotion. Get here
early on weekends, because we’re not the only fans of this
place.

Five Elephant

This is a bakery, micro-roastery and café, with some of the best
cheesecake we’ve ever tasted. At Five Elephant, they are serious
about their coffee, with beans sourced from all over the globe and
public tasting sessions held every Friday from 12 to 2PM. But we
just couldn’t get past that light, creamy cheesecake. Grab a table
out front for perfect people watching, or head inside where world
maps plaster the walls of the bright, airy interior.

Kaschk

Beards, beer and (shuffle) boards make Kaschk our idea of the
perfect early evening hangout. Located in Mitte, this wood-clad,
pseudo-Scandi bar is a local favourite, with some of the city’s
best craft beers on tap. During the day, Kaschk serves a delicious
medley of bakes and coffee, and is perfect for a drizzly afternoon
indoors reading while slowly becoming over-caffeinated.

Coffee chums Shawn Barber and Chris Onton brought their shared
passion to Berlin in 2013, opening up shop in the showroom of
designer clothing sellers Voo. Peruse the swathes of unaffordable
clothing as you sip Companion’s delicious coffee, which is sourced
according to season.
