With
eco-friendly travel becoming increasingly popular,
staycations are at the top of the list for sustainable holiday
options. These are our favourite environmentally sound hotels in
the English capital.
Reduce, reuse and check in: London’s most environmentally
friendly hotels
hotel
One Aldwych
Westminster
In the bustling theatre district, One Aldwych is London’s most
eco-friendly hotel. Having won several awards for sustainability,
the hotel prides itself on green practices including recycling, LED
lighting, biodegradable packaging and water-reduction systems.
Wander around the Edwardian building to admire more than 300 works
of contemporary art, or head to Indigo restaurant for dairy- and
gluten-free modern British cuisine made with seasonal ingredients
sourced from the British Isles.
hotel
The Laslett
Notting Hill
Showcasing the same sense of creativity as its namesake (the
founder of Notting Hill Carnival, Rhaune Laslett), this hotel pairs
quirky antiques and avant-garde artwork with muted colours and
soothing tones. Peruse the stalls of Portobello Road Market and
check out Notting Hill’s impressive café scene before returning to
The Laslett for the evening. An ode to its location, The Henderson
restaurant uses produce that is locally sourced, seasonal and
organic. Dinner demolished, round off the evening with the hotel’s
signature rum-laced cocktail.
hotel
Number Sixteen
Kensington
Despite being a picture of Victorian elegance, this classic
white-stucco terrace house has a shockingly modern outlook. A
tranquil haven in the Big Smoke, it is adorned with contemporary
art and eclectic furnishings from across the globe, while a
tree-filled private garden helps to offset the hotel’s carbon
footprint. Rooms, some benefitting from private outdoor spaces, are
decorated with bold colours and rich woods and have granite
bathrooms kitted out with sustainable toiletries from local London
brand Miller Harris.
hotel
Treehouse London
Marylebone
Founded on the idea that a hotel escape should be filled with as
much adventure, excitement and imagination as a child’s treehouse,
Treehouse London is designed with nostalgia in mind. Pared-back
rooms feature exposed-concrete walls and ceilings, while charming
touches such as soft toys perch on beds. Reclaimed-wood furnishings
give the hotel an outdoorsy atmosphere, while it also runs
eco-conscious composting and recycling programmes, has reduced
single-use plastics and uses organic cottons and locally sourced
toiletries.
hotel
Knightsbridge Hotel
Knightsbridge
Perched along a tree-lined street, this London townhouse pairs
sophisticated interiors with a sustainable ethos – it has a great
recycling scheme and uses environmentally sound products. Spend
days gazing at art-lined walls of the drawing room or cuddling up
with a book in the hotel’s library before heading out to explore
Knightsbridge, where you’ll be spoiled for choice with dining and
drinking options.
hotel
Blakes Hotel
South Kensington
Dreamed up by actress Anouska Hempel, Blakes Hotel’s boutique
style and decadent touches ooze nothing but class and
sophistication. Spend mornings sipping coffee amid the colourful
foliage, patterned cushions and Moroccan-tiled floors of the
Matthew Williamson-designed garden, and afternoons dining on
Mediterranean dishes in the sleek restaurant. Cutting down on water
and chemical waste, the hotel only offers towel- and sheet-washing
services on request.
hotel
The Zetter
Clerkenwell
This boutique hotel sits pretty in historical Clerkenwell. A
converted 19th-century warehouse, the it pairs original features
with stylish, contemporary design and eco-friendly tech galore.
Sustainable systems are rife in the hotel: water is pumped from a
1500ft borehole which means that the building is self sustaining,
while an energy loop system simultaneously heats rooms and cools
down refrigerators. There’s an energy-saving occupancy detection
system installed bedrooms, too, and all timber and paints are
environmentally friendly. If that isn’t enough, the hotel’s
restaurant only uses seasonal ingredients sourced from local
suppliers – cosy up with a cocktail amid retro lamps and
velvet-upholstered chairs to feast on plates of classic British
dishes (be sure to try the charcuterie and cheese boards, served
with homemade crackers and seasonal chutney).
hotel
Artist Residence
Westminster
This eclectic boutique hotel pairs quirky design with a strong
eco-conscious disposition. Artist Residence London prides itself on
recycling waste as well as using energy-saving light bulbs and
eco-friendly cleaning products. Reclaimed and salvaged materials
are used throughout the hotel’s interiors, from the wooden
furnishings in the lounge to the wood-lined en suites and
four-poster beds in hotel bedrooms. Dine on reclaimed-wood tables
in the Cambridge Street restaurant among artwork supplied by local
art gallery Lawrence Alkin before heading upstairs to soak in the
bath with natural Bramley bath products.
