Nibble away from the comfort of your bed at this 52-storey hotel
overlooking Tokyo Tower and the Imperial Palace. When dinner is
lunchtime in your usual time zone, a late-night order of home
comforts are heaven sent. The Tavern – Grill & Lounge’s hearty
soups and substantial salads are our go-tos for when we’re in the
mood for something rustic and homely – chirashi sushi and sake are
always on speed dial if you change your mind.

Admire the still waters of Palma Bay from your private terrace
while you devour wicker baskets full of fresh fruit, pastries and
your chosen morning paper. If you’re feeling flush and plump for
the El Cabo suite with its private pool, you will have little
reason to leave at all – their in-room lunch menu is arguably even
better than breakfast.

If you’re not sipping a Midnight Margarita by the pool or
bottomless brunching at the Commissary, order room service at this
Koreatown-based hotel. The rooms at The Line feel like you’re in
your very own LA loft, so make yourself at home and order in. We’re
thinking vegan pizza and a veggie burger – New York this is
not.

Half the fun of a countryside escape to the Cotswolds is the
prospect of breakfast in bed. Wake ups at Artists Residence should
include: a full English or scrambled hen’s eggs in bed (served on a
rustic-chic wooden tray), a PJ-only policy and BBC Radio 2 humming
in the background. Follow with a brisk country walk before
returning for more grub in their downstairs pub.

Setting itself apart from the rest, Le Bristol was the city’s
first hotel to be designated a “Palace” (a class above five star).
We’ll drink (and eat) to that. Late night croque-monsieurs and
languishing over breakfast in bed may not sound very chic but it’s
a lovely way to spend a Sunday – especially as everything in Paris
is closed anyway. With no pressure to leave your room, camp out in
your suite for the day, savouring supper over views of L’Opera and
the Eiffel Tower.

Those who think food flair is reserved for the restaurant floor
should book a room at the Hôtel Le Toiny. Order the
truffle-parmesan pasta, which comes complete with a giant wheel of
Parmigiano-Reggiano and a chef-cum-cheese-sculptor who carves it
into the shape of a bowl. Once your cheese bowl has been created,
the chef adds spaghetti and black truffles for a decadent feast.
Best to skip lunch before this one.

Lap up magnificent rose- and gold-hued sunset views and watch
the dust settle over the Utah desert from your suite at the
rectangular space-agey Amangiri pavilion. The space age structure
almost disappears completely in the rocky landscape. While you’re
at it, why not make a meal out of it as you watch the stars come
out from your terrace? Each suite has an outdoor lounge and
fireplace – the high desert flatbread is a game changer.

With around-the-clock room service – and rooms as luxurious as
these – it’s easy to cave to an early night at The Middle House,
particularly if jetlag has taken hold. While the city buzzes below,
we’re dialling down to reception and ordering another serving of
dim sum and a side of fries. We’re very east meets west us. (*Full
