Six Gorgeous Hotels in Corsica

Six Gorgeous Hotels in Corsica

We’ve trekked forest-clad peaks and lazed by many an aquamarine pool to bring you our favourite boutique hotels in Corsica.

Rugged
and rocky, lush and wild, with sky-tickling granite
crags, elegant hilltowns and fragrant, blousy summer landscapes
dotted with eucalyptus, juniper, rosemary, sage and lavender,
Corsica is a French island basking in the Italian sun, as the
saying goes.

This wild and rugged isle offers windswept mountain peaks,
fragrant plains and dizzying views, but also cool-blue
Mediterranean coves, soft-sand beaches and very à la France resorts
(complete with disdainful waiters, we might add). Most stick to the
south’s sandy bays (try Santa Giulia) when visiting, but venture
into the north and you’ll find pine tree-fringed hills and steep
olive groves rolling into charming fishermen’s enclaves.

It’s an island of adventure, where visitors can trek up
forest-clad peaks and explore sun-bleached villages, but it also
offers lazy days on the beach under the sun. And the hotel scene?
On the up. Here are seven of our favourite stays on the island
right now.

Charming Corsica: six gorgeous hotels to bed down at

hotel

La Signoria

Calvi

Framed by a backdrop of mountains on one side and endless blue
on the other, La Signoria is a dreamy island hideaway. Peach-toned
rooms with traditional floor tiles are filled with original
artworks and antique furniture. Wander through the hotel to admire
its handsome 18th-century features, before heading outside to relax
under the shade of palm, conifer and orange trees beside the
swimming pool. Spend mornings exploring mountainous hinterlands and
afternoons at the on-site Spa Casanera, where homegrown, organic
Corsican products soothe sore muscles and melt away stress.

Hôtel de la Ferme, Domaine de Murtoli

Sartène

Nestled within the 6,000-acre private estate of its sister
property, the island’s grande dame Domaine de Murtoli, this elegant
nine-bed stay offers a sophisticated escape. Surrounded by rough,
rolling hills, olive trees and the estate’s luscious vegetable
patch, this diminutive hotel is easy to spot by its fiery
terracotta roof. Offering views of the distant mountains that crowd
the horizon, the rustic stone outhouse’s rooms are imbued with
traditional Corsican style – think antique chandeliers,
wood-burning stoves, warm brick walling and exposed beams. We’d
call it “upscale farmhouse” – if your idea of farmhouse includes a
20m, olive-shaded pool and access to three of the island’s best
restaurants.

Hôtel U Capu Biancu

Bonifacio

On the island’s southern shores, U Capu Biancu is a sun-seeker’s
paradise. Choose between two private beaches or the sparkling
infinity pool and, if you get itchy feet, borrow one of the paddle
boards or canoes to explore nearby caves and bays in search of
private, wild corners. Wine lovers can delve to the depths of the
hotel to explore the cellar, which is filled with some of Corsica’s
finest bottles, before heading to the wonderfully rustic beachside
restaurant La Paillote, which serves up traditional Corsican
cuisine amid exposed stone walls and ornate lanterns.

Hôtel Misincu

Cagnano

Surrounded by olive groves, citron blossom and myrtle on the
sleepy, secluded Cap Corse peninsula, this 29-key stay is barefoot
luxury made material, delivering a taste of the south coast’s
sophisticated chicness to the wilder northern shores. Airy rooms
and suites washed by sea breezes are outfitted with raffia chairs,
stone-hued linens and oak accents. The pool – a crystalline slab of
kyanite – is designed for long lazy days spent lounging on the
padded beds suspended above the water.

Bonifacio

Just outside of the quaint Bonifacio harbour, this hotel slots
naturally into the Corsican countryside. Wood-and-stone exteriors
blend sympathetically into the surrounding greenery, providing a
soothing backdrop for your Corsican retreat. Work on your tan by
the infinity pool, kick back on your private panoramic terrace, or

hotel

La Plage Casadelmar

Porto-Vecchio

Rooms of muted tones seemingly melt into the surrounding
landscape, while leafy branches frame ocean vistas through your
window. Tucked in a sandy cove, the hotel’s ethos is centred around
relaxation. Get stuck into a good book on the private white-sand
beach, taking frequent dips in the crystal-clear Mediterranean to
cool off. Come evening, wind your way through the gardens beneath
fig and palm trees to dine at La Plage Casadelmar’s restaurant,
where exquisite food, the ingredients for which come fresh from
nearby markets, is served on a terrace overlooking the bay of
Porto-Vecchio.
