Where to Shop in Cambridge, UK

We’ve scanned the shelves, tasted the goods and stuffed our tote bags with the very best that Cambridge’s independents have to offer. These are our go-to boutiques for buying local when visiting the butter-toned city

Everyone
knows the unwritten rule when exploring a new
destination: shopping locally is essential. It’s through visiting
independent boutiques that you have the pleasure of meeting the
people and hearing the stories that have shaped a high street and
kept a place’s heritage crafts alive. Cambridge is a city that
really delivers when it comes to community-first businesses, but it
can be difficult to know where to find them. So, we’ve done the
legwork to bring you the inside scoop on the must-visit stores.

Heffers Bookshop

Heffers Bookshop

Since opening in 1876, Heffers has acted as a playground for
bookworms in search of a new page-turner. Despite its dated
interiors, its spirit is anything but old. With an impressive
selection of classic and contemporary titles, it’s difficult not to
spend an entire day rummaging its shelves. Board-game fans will
delight at the collection of handmade, custom and special-edition
versions on offer.

Cambridge Market Square

Cambridge Market Square

While perhaps best known for its food stalls, Cambridge Market
Square is an oasis of art, homeware, fashion and design. Whether
you’re searching for a new house plant or are on the hunt for some
pre-loved garms, this is the place to come. While the market itself
is open year-round (minus Christmas Day and Boxing Day, obviously),
it’s only on Saturdays that the handmade arts and crafts market
takes place.

Cambridge Cheese Company

The Cambridge Cheese Company

Though you’ll likely smell the rich aromas before you spot the
baskets brimming with condiments and local delicacies, if in doubt,
track down the glass-fronted exterior plastered in hand-scribbled
daily specials and you’ll know you’re in the right place. The
Cambridge Cheese Company’s walls are lined with wines, breads and
packaged hams, with hampers on standby for those who struggle to
curate the perfect cheeseboard. There are also guided tasting
tours, where themed sessions can be tailored by region or
country.
