It might be a diverse metropolis - a panoply of distinctive neighbourhoods, each with their own customs - but the one thing that unites New Yorkers from the Bronx to Brooklyn is their unfettered and somewhat pricey caffeine addiction. Whittling down the city's most exquisite coffee pit-stops to a neat 10 was no easy feat, but here they are: the best cafés in New York.

Little Italy
This French-inspired café has a homely feel - think weathered wooden furniture and creaky floorboards. You'll find a few of Maman branches speckled over Manhattan and Brooklyn, but the Little Italy spot is our favourite. Understandably, Oprah once called its choc-chip cookie one of her "favourite things".

West Village
This spot was founded by a Vancouver native and has an accordingly healthy menu. Come here for light bites, juices and great coffee. We love its decadent take on humble oatmeal, made with steel-cut oats and almond-coconut crumble, obvs.
