The Carry On: November 2019

The Carry On is our monthly round-up of our favourite travel items we'd happily haul from Stansted to Seville, Heathrow to Hydra. Be it a functional fedora or the latest in skincare science, we've probably got it in our carry on. Riffing on the adage "if you can think it, you can be it", we're saying: "If you can jam it in your carry on… you can bring it." Catchy.

Note: weight restrictions and other practicalities do not apply.

From crystals and CBD to eco-friendly apps, these are the latest items we're packing in our suitcase…

Pink Check Jacket

Topshop

Wearing a jacket (with multiple pockets) while boarding a flight is savvy packing 2.0. Aside from the space saved by wearing the bulkiest item you own (and loading down the pockets with in-flight snacks), a jacket shrugged on over pared-back separates elevates your airport look no end. This one from Topshop puts a cerebral, feminine spin on chunky checks. It's perfect for autumnal escapes and lengthy countryside walks, and we're particularly taken by this model's four, deep patch pockets (see early snacks reference).

Superhuman

Between takeoff and landing our inbox can amass hundreds of emails - this has been the case on even the shortest London-to-Dublin flight, during which (in just 55 minutes) 102 emails were accrued. So, the question is: how much money would pay for that pesky red dot to drop off your Gmail icon? Can you even put a price on that? For £30 Superhuman can make you an "inbox zero" person and cure your email fatigue. With shortcuts to empty your inbox - split inbox is a feature to fangirl over - Superhuman allows you to work at double the speed. While some features are pretty standard (follow up reminds, schedule sends etc.) others are pretty revolutionary - think next-level insights from your emailer's social network. We're not surprised there's a long waiting list for this one; best to sign up sharpish.

Crease Release Spray

The Laundress

This eco-friendly New York brand, set up shop to take the stress out of laundry (#grateful). For those hoping to peel out their favourite garments from their cases without the hassle of sourcing an iron from the hotel concierge or racking up a sizeable dry cleaning bill before wearing, this Crease Release spray is one product worth keeping close to hand. Just a quick spritz from six inches away, followed by a gentle pat will release wrinkles from your clothes - then hang or lay flat in its natural shape until you're ready to wear. Simple.

Technical Cross-Body Belt Bag

COS

Belt bags, fanny packs, bum bags, whatever you call them, they're an undeniably practical travel accessory. Once derided, these retro waist-cinchers have made their way back into our everyday style rotation. When packing space is limited, an athletic style statement that blends with the majority of our wardrobe is precisely the accessory we want to take with us. Team it with a blazer and slides for an off-duty city edit on your trip to Berlin or sling it over your shoulder (this COS one comes with an adjustable strap) as you set off on your next outdoor workout in LA.

Cards

Scribble & Daub

Maybe it's that we've been reverting to more nostalgic forms of transport recently (namely trains), but we've really taken pause and become altogether sentimental about analogue. Displeased by shortcuts, we're reading more (SUITCASE Magazine, of course) and we've also become addicted to letter writing. It's much more therapeutic than a text and who doesn't love proper post? These hand-drawn and letterpressed cards by Scribble & Daub, which are finished and packaged up in a tiny cottage studio in East Sussex countryside, are perfect for scrawling love letters or notes of thanks - and are far prettier than any postcard we've ever sent.

My Skin Track UV Sensor

La Roche Posay

We all know we should wear sunscreen the majority of the time but incorporating an SPF into our daily routine isn't as automatic as it should be. We can be rigorous about it for a couple of weeks in the sun, but once we're back home we tend to get a little lax. This clip-on mini wearable by La Roche-Posay tracks environmental stressors that affect the health of your skin - including UV rays, pollution, humidity and pollen levels - and sends all the information to an app on your phone called My Skin Track UV. Based on information collected, the app offers personalised tips and skincare recommendations that can help improve your healthy skin regimen. A skincare essential for city dwellers and intrepid travellers.

High-Rise Faux Leather Leggings

Spanx

They look like trousers, but are in fact glorified leggings. This faux-leather style by Spanx operates outside the sartorial no-go zone, where the majority of our stretch-material clothing has been relegated. Surprisingly edgy and adaptable, these are a great alternative to leather trousers - structured but not restrictive (with a built-in, shaping waistband) and far more hygienic (leather pants are a nightmare to wash). Though not workout appropriate, they can be paired with just about anything else; modular dressing is the key to successful packing after all.

T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum

Drunk Elephant

We are not narcissistic (or generally hyperbolic) but to say our skin is transformed/ ageless/ the best it's looked since we were five years old, after using T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum is no exaggeration. We advise applying to a clean, dry face and decolletage before bed time so this maverick product can get to work smoothing and polishing skin as you sleep. Infused with alpha hydroxy acid and beta hydroxy acid, which helps to refine and resurface skin, this is a worthwhile purchase for travel-tired skin in need of a refresh.
