The Carry On: October 2019

The Carry On is our monthly round-up of our favourite travel items we'd happily haul from Stansted to Seville, Heathrow to Hydra. Be it a functional fedora or the latest in skincare science, we've probably got it in our carry on. Riffing on the adage "if you can think it, you can be it", we're saying: "If you can jam it in your carry on… you can bring it." Catchy.

Note: weight restrictions and other practicalities do not apply.

From crystals and CBD to eco-friendly apps, these are the latest items we're packing in our suitcase…

Extra Large Bolga Fan Zigzag

Lola & Mawu

Generally considered a functional accessory, this XXL fan feels more ceremonial than your average handheld wafting device. While many would consider these unusually large Bolga fans as home decorations, we're embracing the drama their robustness brings to an outfit. Handcrafted by a women's collective in Bolgatanga, Ghana, they are made purely from straw and are therefore vegan friendly. Choose one or, if you want to create a stronger statement, try a combination of two or three (also useful if you're travelling with an assembly line of fanless, fiercely sweaty friends).

The Outer Body

Heist

Most people pack a spare pair of pants and a toothbrush in their hand luggage, just in case their checked baggage goes for a wander. If we may, we would suggest adding Heist's The Outer Body to this roll call of essentials. Here's why: the bodysuit smooths and supports, looks particularly polished when worn underneath anything slinky and (if you're really in a pinch) can even double as a swimsuit. In fact, we're such fans that we're wearing ours en route to the airport, paired with cut-off jeans and an oversized, slouchy silk shirt. Ever the chameleon.

Aura Spray

Moon Mist

What do you mean you don't have an Aura Spray? Let us be the guru that guides your next purchase. We first discovered Moon Mist on an LA-bound flight a few years back, and now consider it a must-travel-with item. Made with the purest crystal water and enriched with essential oils, a little bit of alcohol for preservation purposes, and a pinch of Himalayan rock salt, this spritz promises to ebb stress and anxiety. This is the kind of stuff used by South American shamans for its powerful cleansing and purifying healing power, so douse yourself with the stuff before a meditation session or post high-stress meeting for a hit of Zen.

Blinkist

Swot up on the latest must-reads in a fraction of the time, regurgitate informed opinions at the drop of a hat and impress your peers with your well-rounded dinner conversation. Our iPhone has been monitoring our usage of the Blinkist - an app that summarises best selling nonfiction texts - and it's clear we are now fully dependent on its quick knowledge hits. Monochrome Slippers

Mahabis

Slippers out of the home is the ultimate peak in loungewear; we're particularly fond of our Mahabis (now referred to as our in-flight heros). Backless, pain-free and swell-proof, they are the perfect travel shoe. We'll wear our monochrome mules with any outfit, anywhere, anytime. Their minimalist design - inspired by the light and shadows of the dramatic Nordic landscape - soft corriedale wool lining and adaptable foam insole that contours to your foot so comfy tootsies are a constant.

CBD-infused drink

Trip

If you consider yourself an anxious flyer, you probably have a casefull of remedies to calm you down in a moment of bad turbulence or a delay announcement. We're fully prepared to down a glass of red and cry our hearts out while watching a bad movie 35,000ft in the air. But then there's Trip, a CBD-infused sparkling drink - available in peach ginger, elderflower mint and cold-brew coffee flavours. In our opinion, Trip has effectively canned calm. It's crafted with natural adaptogens and rich in antioxidants it claims to support immunity, focus and relief from stress. Crack open a can pre-airport run to help manage anxiety. No more freaking out on planes. We'll drink to that.
