This glass-fronted bakery has a window stacked with giant, buttery-coloured meringues, but the shop’s flaky steak pasty is the real reason to pay it a visit. Peppery, juicy meat in a pocket of crumbly shortcrust pastry. If there is a better pasty in all of Cornwall, we’d like to see it.

You’re basking in the midday sun, dozing to the lapping of waves when your stomach rumbles. The dilemma seems to be whether you keep your perfect beach spot or sacrifice it, get clothed and trek into the town for some food. Not so. Porthmeor’s West Beach restaurant serves some of the best Neapolitan-style pizza this side of the Tamar Bridge. Simply pick up a takeaway pizza and an ice-cold beer or two – just make sure to cover your food; the seagulls know a good lunch when they see one.

Sweet tooth? We know you came to St Ives for the famed Cornish ice cream, and Moomaid is the place you need to visit. It’s the best ice cream in the area. It’s produced on a family-run dairy farm on the cliffs of Zennor, but you can find its parlours in Zennor village, St Ives Harbour and Porthtowan. We recommend a scoop of the Shipwreck if you’re a fan of honeycomb. Dairy-free? There’s a great selection of sorbets too.

It’s unsurprising that seafood is great in St Ives. Among the best places to get your fill is in Downalong, the old fishing quarter of St Ives, where you’ll find The Mermaid Seafood Restaurant. Serving fresh catch in an old fisherman’s-style interior, this is a true Cornish feast and then some. We’d recommend ordering the surf and turf, but truly everything is great on the menu.

Sun-kissed from the day and looking for a romantic dinner-date destination, you should head to this sea-facing restaurant set in a 30s beach house where Cornish ingredients – many foraged or locally sourced – mingle with Asian and Mediterranean cooking techniques.
