Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Robin Hood were all shot in Dubrovnik, and while you could join the throngs of tourists getting their photo taken in famous locations, if you're anything like us, you'd much prefer to hit the beach.
Hotel Bellevue enjoys a prime location in picturesque Miramare Bay, between the sixth-century old town and Lapad, where a pebbly beach is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Clinging to the 30m-high cliffside, just a 10-minute walk from the hubbub of the city, it's all gleaming white and glass, with a contemporary look and feel that makes a refreshing contrast to the summer heat.
Part of the Adriatic Luxury Hotels collection, this five-star stay feels international - don't expect a swathe of traditional Croatian design touches here - and will suit everyone from couples to families and groups of friends thanks to its laid-back atmosphere. We were hugely impressed by the terrace restaurant, where we had some of the best food of our whole trip.
A muted palette of whites and greys set against wooden floors creates a serene environment throughout all 91 rooms, 14 of which are suites. The simple design thoughtfully doesn't detract from the sparkling azure of the Adriatic, showcased in full glory through floor-to-ceiling balcony doors. Bathrooms are spacious and well-equipped.
The usual suspects - to be eaten on your terrace, in a bathrobe, obvs.
Lunch on your sun lounger at beachside Nevera - tuna tartare, burgers and salads, washed down with a bottle of local white. For dinner, fine-dining Vapor is a marvel. The menu features the likes of swordfish carpaccio, lobster bisque, homemade gnocchi, roasted octopus and perfectly pink lamb chops, with every dish spot on; packed full of regional ingredients, artfully arranged and, ultimately, really delicious. The sommelier was also exceptionally friendly (always a good sign in our book).
Yep, Spice Lounge, which has indoor and outdoor areas, is a relaxed place for cocktails. You'll also find a dedicated wine bar offering 180 different wines and champagnes.

The "private" beach isn't really private - the hotel merely has sun loungers that are reserved for guests.
We couldn't find much beyond the local, seasonal produce used in the restaurants.
The hotel has a lift and accessible rooms. Dubrovnik is not particularly accessible in general, however, due to steep hills throughout the town and many beaches only accessible by descending a cliff.
Mooch into the old town for a walk through a bygone era and your choice of plenty of top-notch restaurants. Be sure to have oysters at least once (they're almost as cheap as chips here).
