We imagine that paradise must look something like Isola di Cavallo. On this small private island between Corsica and Sardinia, Hôtel & Spa des Pêcheurs, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, makes the most of its natural environment with picturesque views and flawless service.
If an earthly paradise existed, it would probably look something like Isola di Cavallo. This tiny private island along the popular sailing route between Corsica and Sardinia can be accessed only by residents and guests of the Hôtel & Spa des Pêcheurs, which makes it perfect for anyone looking to escape the heaving streets of popular summer hotspots to recharge in peace. Frequented by the likes of Roberto Cavailli and Prince Eugene of Savoy, it's the kind of place where you can expect both picturesque views and flawless, discrete service.
The hotel was built with respect for its natural environment, which becomes evident as you approach the island: no building is higher than two storeys and the island's native rock is used throughout, making the hotel disappear into its wild habitat. There are 50 rooms at Hotel des Pêcheurs, one of which is a Grande Suite. All of them are spacious and have some of the most comfortable beds in which we've ever slept. Opt for a sea view terrace - you will not regret it.
A full continental breakfast is served every morning in the main restaurant of the hotel. Expect Corsican cheeses and cold cuts as well as fresh fruit and fluffy pastries. If privacy is what you're after, order room service to your private terrace.
If you're tired from exploring and snorkelling and don't want to venture far, book into one of the two restaurants at the hotel. The Shore Club offers a relaxed setting and a typically European menu, whereas Restaurant des Pêcheurs serves Corsican classics, combining the best of Italian and French cuisines - expect seafood pasta and freshly caught local fish.
Those heading out of the hotel should opt for the pizzeria at the nearby marina or head up the hill to La Ferme, where you can enjoy cocktails with breathtaking views that stretch across the whole island.
The lounge bar overlooks the quiet bay - admire pink sunsets while sipping on a glass (or two) of Cap Corse Mattei, a local vermouth-like aperitif. If you're feeling romantic, retreat to your private terrace with a bottle of ice-cold Corsican rosé from the minibar.
This hotel has a spa and massage service, a well-equipped gym and a pool. You can also rent bikes and electric cars to move around the island or a skipper boat if open water is what you're after.
Isola di Cavallo is a marine and nature reserve, which means you have to leave your car behind. A regular boat shuttle runs from the marina to Piantarella on the Corsican mainland, but make sure to enquire about the schedule prior to travelling as it may change depending upon both weather and demand. Alternatively, book onto a private transfer, which can also be arranged through the hotel.
Some of the most beautiful beaches you can imagine. Expect crystal-clear water, fine sand and (most importantly) hardly anyone else who will be putting their towel down next to you.
