Marrakech, Morocco: Desert Rose

For Volume 14 of SUITCASE Magazine, The Art Issue, we travelled to Marrakech to capture the city's enchanting beauty. For centuries artists, designers and writers have been drawn to this ancient city for its beguiling light and colour, as well as its history and culture.

Our team enjoyed warm, filtered sun in the depths of January, shooting across several locations. We spent hours at the 28-suite Beldi Country Club, exploring the property's gardens across their 14 hectares of land.

Photographer Lucia O'Connor-McCarthy managed to keep cool as ever, even in stressful situations like shooting in the heart of the city's medina. Stylist Savannah Baker embraced her surroundings with a palette inspired by reflecting light and earthy colours. Savannah's assistant Tali Ramsey was there help make last-minute adjustments and quick accessory changes. Scarlett Burton made sure that hair and make-up translated to the overall vision of the editorial.

After shooting in the medina, we made our way to Riad Dar Darma, a renovated 17th century of whimsical cavernous rooms and mesmerising tiled floors, where we captured our model Cassey Chanel against a dark grey background, reminding everyone in the team of the Girl with the Pearl Earring (seriously).

In an area outside of Marrakech called Palmeraie, a desert covered with bold palm trees, we came across a baby camel, which Cassey plied with tufts of grass to keep it still. It was there that we wrapped up the shoot, and treated ourselves to a cup of steaming mint tea before heading back to the heart of Marrakech.
