World War One drove many French artists south, where they took up residence along the Cote d'Azur. When peacetime came, some stayed, and among them were Fernand Léger, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse. Now labelled 20th-century masters, they then offered their works in exchange for bed and board at Colombe D'Or. The result: a museum's worth of art. Aside from the Calder mobile that overhangs the pool and César Baldaccini's oversized thumb sculpture which greets you on entry, you'll spot the Fernand Léger mosaic with ease as you sit down to lunch. The 1952 mosaic peers through a frame of dense ivy for al fresco diners to enjoy.

A creative incubator as much as it is a hotel, The Drake aims to connect the public with artists working in all media from across town. Overlooking a bustling stretch of West Queen West, the Drake Sky Yard is a sun-soaked rooftop where guests can feast on locally sourced fare and a slew of finely crafted cocktails. The Marfa-inspired terrace (think Southwest meets Queen West) features a mural by Toronto artist Louise Reimer. Her work is inspired by the colours and visual history of Marfa, Texas: "a Wild West of headstrong women and an everlasting golden hour."

With sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea and a photogenic stoned-lined pool by the surf, boutique hotel Les Roches Rouges serves up effortlessly cool vibes at every turn. Enhancing the said vibe - for this season only - are the works of artists Rosie McGuinness, Caroline Popham and Cecilia Carlstedt. "Painting Les Roches Red", their eye-catching murals are located in the outdoor Michelin-starred restaurant, La Terrasse, and on the wall of one of the downstairs relaxation areas. Reverence is paid to Matisse, whose influence is clearly felt.

Tucked down a leafy avenue just a stone's throw from the Sunset Strip, this homely West Hollywood hotel presents over 150 artworks from its owner's private collection. Among them are pieces from illustrious artists as Dalí, Miró, de Kooning and Rauschenberg. Beyond framed works, the hotel's hand-painted walls offer another creative outlet. At The Butterfly Bar you'll note a winged mural; on the staircase, a circus-themed mural by Marcus Suarez; and in certain guest bathrooms or on bedroom ceilings, scrawlings by local artists appear and disappear at whim.

Walk into Bemelmans Bar at the storied Carlyle Hotel and you'll immediately notice the painterly mural by Ludwig Bemelmans that adorns its walls. Bemelmans, author of the Madeline book series, received a year and a half free accommodation at the hotel for his commission. While a hotel resident, he attended numerous dinner performances by the likes of Judy Collins and Woody Allen (playing jazz clarinet) at his eponymously named drinking den.
