The Volcanic Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Someone once told to me that a photograph is like a familiar scent - it has the power to recall a memory that is otherwise lost. There are some places in the world so rich and sensual that they linger like the perfume of a past love. The memory of my time in Lake Atitlan brings to mind a spectacle of natural beauty. The volcanic soil in the area has allowed luscious plant life to thrive. Unlike more popular destinations in Central America, such as Mexico and Costa Rica, Guatemala seems to have retained its mystique by escaping the heavy gentrification of its neighbouring countries. The smaller villages and healing centres that surround Lake Atitlan are accessible by boat and truck and otherwise must be reached by foot. For this reason, it remains a captivating place for those who travel through, and a tranquil haven for those who call it home.
