Story: As the fourth most populated city in the world, Mexico City (also called District Federal or DF, pronounced “de-efe”) isn’t exactly the place to go for rest and relaxation. And yet, despite its 20+ million inhabitants, its chaotic side hangs in perfect balance with the more tranquil neighbourhoods. Staying in the hip and harmonious borough of La Condesa with its coffee shops and restaurants lining every street, we sheltered ourselves from the voracious heat and hustle of the tourist-heavy Zocalo district.

We gorged on jewel-coloured mangoes with chilli sauce and stopped for street-side corn on the cob, homemade smoothies and fragrant tacos. We had dinner at the award-winning restaurant Pujol – supposedly one of the top 20 places to eat in the world – and spent many afternoons soaking up the warmth and kindness of the many locals we encountered. During a cooler weekday we ventured to the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan and climbed the age-old steps for a beautiful view from the peak of the Pyramid of the Sun.

We also had some unforgettable nights out, notably when we went to watch hilarious WWE-style Mexican fighting at Luche Libre. I’d recommend Mexico City to anyone: it’s the most vibrant urban jungle you could ask for thanks to the people, food, markets and weather. The only question you’ll be left asking is “Why don’t I live here?”
