Proper pub grub
Prepare for posh pub grub in abundance. Both in Windsor and the surrounding countryside, you’ll find historic ale houses serving first-class fare. The chargrilled English asparagus with duck egg mayo and tomato relish is in itself worth the 20-minute drive out to the 17th-century Shurlock Inn in our book, but if you’d rather stay in the castle’s shadow, hop along to The Queen Charlotte for Mediterranean-leaning sharing boards, tapas favourites and a nostalgic dollop of the spectacular Eton mess knickerbocker glory (sharing advised). To sample the local brews, take a 10-minute stroll across the Thames into Eton and prop up the bar at The George – the Windsor & Eton Brewery’s toffee-tasting Golden Ale pairs perfectly with a menu of hearty pub classics.
