Beyond the West End: 10 of the UK’s Best Theatres You Can Visit Now

Think of British theatre and it’s likely you think of London’s West End. At a time when arts and culture industries need our support more than ever, we’re spotlighting the best theatres around the UK and the shows you should see in autumn/ winter 2020.

Socially distanced seating, mandatory face masks during performances and table service for securing those interval aperitifs, regional theatres are (safely) reopening across the country.

When we think of British theatre, our thoughts go immediately to the glittering West End with its flashy musicals and famous actors. But beyond the fringes of London is a web of thriving regional theatres, bringing pantomime, Shakespeare, musicals and new writing to their communities. They are often beautiful, multi-purpose venues that provide not only entertainment but a place for local people to gather and be known.

The stage is a British past-time, something to be proud of and something to keep alive; it brings people together, encourages empathy and frankly, it's a good night out. One way we can really support the arts during this time is to get behind the regional theatres that are going out of their way to make theatre under the new regulations, perhaps even incorporating their work in our new staycation plans. Here are a few suggestions to whet your appetite.
