Once the local hangout of personalities such Ernst Hemingway, Harry’s bar – brainchild of Arrigo Cipriani – is as touristy and pricey as ever, but still worth the experience. This is where the bellini was invented so by all means try one, but if fruity cocktails aren’t your thing, be assured that their martinis are also a good bet.

This sleek bar, perched at the top of the imposing Molino Stucky on the Giudecca, is graced by one of the best views on the city. Summer sunsets feel infinite from here and drinks are washed down with joyful abandon. The list of cocktails is imaginative and inspired by the spirit of the various neighbourhoods of Venice, thus presenting some good alternatives to the omnipresent spritz.

Campo Santa Margherita is a favourite hangout among students and young residents, not least because it congregates some of the few bars in town that stay open until past midnight. Among them, Chet Bar is known for the extent of their cocktail list and the slightly more composed ambiance. Seize a table overlooking the campo (square) and watch the world go by.
