THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED.
A two-hour train ride from London, Cardiff - home to Dame Shirley Bassey - is one of our favourite destinations for a short-haul weekend escape.
A trip to the Welsh capital has edged its way to the top of our staycation list, so we've teamed up with Visit Wales to send a SUITCASE reader and a friend to Cardiff for a couple of days filled with good food and plenty of hwyl - that's fun in Welsh.
You'll be staying at the contemporary-cool voco™ St David's, set amid concrete piers, ship basins and boardwalks overlooking the waterfront of Cardiff Bay. Standing out from the crowd thanks to its dynamic style and glass-backed atrium structure, you'll be taking the capital in from a height - the hotel's Signature Suite King Bed comes with panoramic views - clad in a fluffy robe.
Come morning, enjoy a moreish breakfast on the hotel before an afternoon spent exploring Cardiff's cultural offering. The Chapter Arts Centre in hip Canton is a great place to start while The National Museum Cardiff's Photography exhibit (catch it before it closes on 1 March 2020) - displaying works by notables including August Sander, Bernd and Hilla Becher and Martin - will pique the interest of snap-happy visitors.
When hunger strikes, we've another treat lined up for you. Not just an English pursuit, the Welsh are also a dab hand at afternoon tea and The Angel in Abergavenny serves up one of the best in town. A member of the prestigious UK Tea Guilds (a title afforded to only nine hotels outside London), sandwiches brim with local fillings, while scrumptious homemade bakes and warm scones round off proceedings with a hit of something sweet.
As night falls, take a stroll along the seafront before crossing Cardiff Bay Barrage, a pedestrian walkway connecting the city to the seaside town of Penarth. Here, you'll be getting the Michelin-starred treatment at BBC Great British Menu finalist James Sommerin's eponymous restaurant. Plump for one of the sensational tasting menus where butter-poached lobster is followed by tender Welsh lamb cooked three ways, or his signature pea ravioli.
