It's sweater season. Radiators are just one cold blast away from being switched on, sandals have been banished and iced coffees? We'll have ours piping hot, pumpkin-spiced even. If you're anything like us, you're already scouring Instagram in pursuit of that perfect 2020 autumn getaway; a secluded home tucked among fuzzy green folds that will allow you to slip away from the trappings of lockdown life and into a cosy but luxurious nest.
With that in mind, we reached out to 57 Nord, a boutique hideaway buried among the glacial landscape of the Scottish Highlands. In partnership with Host Unusual, our favourite platform to visit for home rentals in the UK and beyond, they've hooked us up with a three-night-stay for two.
Inspired by Western Scotland's Norse-Gael heritage, this modern interpretation of a traditional crofter's dwelling might look like a mere speckle in the mountains from afar, but there's nothing wee about it. Rippled with marble, scented by L:A Bruket products and spliced by floor-to-ceiling windows, this Nordic beauty gives the epic hills it calls home a run for their money.
After nights spent sleeping in perfect silence under an iridescent blanket of stars, you'll wake to the Highlands as you've never seen them before - the cascading troughs and majestic crests of the Kintail Mountains framed with an architect's precision. Nourish your soul by feasting on the views, cuppa in hand, before tucking into a breakfast hamper of local delicacies ahead of an action-packed day in the hills.
Hikes await. Soak up that crisp, Highland air by trekking to the glorious Eilean Donan Castle at Loch Duich, swig some drams on a tour of Skye's Talisker Distillery, score the mountains by car on the Bealach na Bà (a stretch of James Bond-worthy sublimity on The North Coast 500) or hop on a boat to the Isle of Skye, where the Fairy Pools and salty-fresh langoustines await. There might be a nip in the air, but there'll be plenty of time to recuperate at 57 Nord.
As the felted green hills fade to deepest indigo, clink glasses over the roaring fire pit before crashing out, wrapped in the billowing linens of your super king-size bed. It's safe to say, we're a little bit jealous of this one.
