We’ve
We’ve
wandered the labyrinthine streets of Morocco’s red city to seek out the best
affordable hideaways it has to offer. You’d needn’t splurge to stay
in the heart of the medina’s bustle, and there’s no need to scrimp
on style or atmosphere when holidaying in Marrakech – even with pulled purse strings.
Each of these elegant escapes will set you back less than £200 per
night, yet offer plenty of eye-catching details and authentic
hospitality.
Nine pocket-friendly places to stay in Marrakech
hotel
Dar Hanane
Striped chairs and chunky Berber rugs will beguile interior
enthusiasts on arrival at the six-bedroom Dar Hanane. Room rates
start from just £97 in low season, but they don’t scrimp on style –
you can expect walls adorned with traditional lanterns, elegantly
shuttered windows and colourful curios artfully placed throughout.
Awake in a four-poster bed (if you check into the Beldi Room) and
take breakfast on the patio, with views over the jigsaw-like
rooftops for a steal. After a morning exploring the medina, take
five with a tea beneath the domed ceiling of the downstairs
salon.
hotel
Jnane Tamsna
This lush, boutique residence in the Palmeraie district comes
with five swimming pools, 24 bohemian-style rooms… and nine acres
of lush landscaping developed by owner – and keen ethnobotanist –
Gary Martin. Book out a couple of rooms for a group getaway with
friends: our top picks are the Casablanca Room that has a large
private terrace, and the Green Syrian Room that looks out over the
on-site olive grove. Don’t miss dinner from the kitchen – the menu
pairs Moroccan classics with Mediterranean influences, using
ingredients grown in the hotel’s own gardens.
hotel
Riad Azzar
A (heavy) unmarked door masks the six-key Riad Azzar. Passing
through the palm-laden interior courtyard you’ll find this
traditional riad’s abundant collection of North African art, which
lift the property’s sleek white walls. Our pick for a great
mid-priced option is the pretty, yellow-hued Mediouna room, which
leads straight out to the plunge pool and courtyard.
hotel
P’tit Habibi
Fusing tradition and modernity, this boutique hotel has lots of
personality. Each bedroom feels more chic than the last, so
settling on a boudoir is tricky. We’ve our hearts set on the
spacious White Room, complete with French balcony and in-room
fireplace. For the most economical stay, snap up the Peruche room –
it might be a petite chambre but its huge vaulted bathroom and bird
motifs are as delightful as the price (£108 per night).
hotel
Riad Jaaneman
Located on one of the quietest patches of the medina, getting a
good night’s kip at the five-suite Riad Jaaneman won’t be an issue,
and from just £163. This Italian owner’s Mediterranean influences
peek through the stylish muted palette and Moroccan decor. There’s
no restaurant in the hotel, but you can enjoy your breakfast
(usually included in your room rate) in the courtyard, on the roof
terrace, or – if you’re too comfortable to relocate – in your
room.
hotel
Ksar Kasbah & Spa
After a morning of exploring and adventuring, Ksar Kasbah &
Spa – close to the famous Saadian Tombs – is primed for poolside
lounging. And later, as the sun makes its way towards the horizon,
rooftop dining. The overall vibe here is relaxed: bohemian
interiors and cool, calm spaces. Rooms are simple yet elegant, and
start from £113 euros for a single room, or £130 for a double.
hotel
Riad Dar One
Simply does it at Riad Dar One. Comprising five rooms and one
suite, these quarters are elegantly unfussy, pairing old riad charm
with modern comforts. Located in the medina’s Jewish quarter, the
dar (house) has a contemporary feel – in lieu of a pool, there’s a
rooftop shower to keep cool under the blazing Moroccan sun. Rent
out the who at a steal – it sleeps up to 12.
Address
Derb Jamaa El Kabir Number 19 Hay Salem Medina, Marrakech derb Jemaa El Kebir
hotel
Riad Jardin Secret
Like something out of a story book, Riad Jardin Secret was
designed to be “anti-modern”. Don’t fear, all your mod-cons are in
place – the motto is more a dedication to celebrating the beautiful
imperfection of art and craft. Flea-market purchases and individual
items from craftspeople fill the honeyed, jewel-toned interiors;
the overall feel is one of homeliness and originality – and rooms
start from just £144 a night. Creative types should consider
applying to their artist residency programme. If accepted, you’ll
be (aptly) hosted in The Studio for an extended stay.
hotel
Louhou Riad
Louhou Riad is an elegant five-bed in the Kasbah neighbourhood
of the historic medina. Perfectly paired back – monochrome
enthusiasts will love it here – the vibe is serene. You can choose
between standard and superior rooms, but the only difference is a
few more square feet. All are kitted out with boho interiors:
think, natural linens, wicker lampshades and elegant marbled
bathrooms. Breakfast is included in each category. Take to the
winding streets in the morning to explore, before returning to cool
down in the rooftop pool.
