bar
El Barón
Cartagena, Colombia
Co-owner Noah Matties is a German chemist, so the cocktails in El Baron are all about the science. Everything from the type and size of ice to how long the mint for mojitos is blanched for is carefully considered. The herbs used in the cocktails are sourced locally to help support developing communities. He’s even been known to distil his own spirits on special occasions.
bar
Bazurto Social Club
Cartagena, Colombia
This is where the real Caribbean party happens. Locals let their hair down under a giant glowing red fish, catch up on Getsemani gossip and stomp along to live champeta music until 4AM on a sweaty dance floor with an electrifying atmosphere and plenty of gyrating.
bar
Malagana
Cartagena, Colombia
Head to the mosaic-tiled rooftop to watch the sunset at this family-owned restaurant-cum-bar. Slurp frozen margaritas made with local fruits and, if you hang around long enough, join in the impromptu party that inevitably gets going once the Malagana family have clocked off work.
bar
Quiebra-Canto
Cartagena, Colombia
Less showy and touristy than its rival Cafe Havana, this Getsemani salsa joint draws a more down-to-earth crowd. Ask a local to teach you the basics, and then salsa the night away.
bar
Alquimico
Cartagena, Colombia
Serving up a beguiling mix of sensory delights in a beautiful old shoe store, Alquimico brings some serious style to Cartagena’s burgeoning nightlife scene. The decadent design and vibe are straight out of the pages of a Fitzgerald novel.
bar
Café Havana
Cartagena, Colombia
Since Café Havana opened its doors in the once-unfashionable Getsemani district in 2006 it has transformed perceptions of the area, luring an international crowd off the beaten track to dance to a live salsa band and down seriously punchy mojitos.
