Every Sunday from about 10AM, flower power fills the General Osorio Square as Rio’s most popular market moves in. Overflowing with art, jewellery, shirts, bags and furniture – this is the place to pick up souvenirs. It’s also a great opportunity to sample traditional Bahian cuisine – just try to resist the tempting fumes wafting from the many food stalls.

Stop by Farm to pick up a slice of cool carioca style. This flagship store in the centre of Ipanema’s high street is famous for its bohemian prints – be prepared for an injection of colour into your wardrobe as friendly staff usher you between row after row of paisley skirts, flowing dresses and spangly accessories.

Spanning the length of Lapa’s Rua Lavradio, the Feira Rio Antigo brings together over 400 stalls peddling everything from 70s furniture to records, bric-a-brac and handicrafts. You’ll also find vintage clothes – make a beeline for Brecho Travinha for beautiful dresses from the 50s and 60s. The fair takes place on the first Saturday of every month.

Located in the Jardim Botânico district, Dona Coisa has an impressive selection of Brazilian and international clothes, accessories, homeware and beauty products. Keep your eyes peeled for timeless, one-off pieces which will make you feel super smug on your return home.
