The harbourfront Adriana Hotel appears first on every “where to stay in Hvar” list and it’s unsurprising considering that such stylish lodging is seen few other places on the island. The hotel’s 59 rooms (including nine Spa Suites) have been swathed in neutral tones and natural materials – think polished wood, nude linens and lilac accents. See and be seen at The Top, Adriana’s aptly named roof bar where young leggy things wade in the seawater pool and golden limbs drape over cabanas while you sip ice-cold cocktails and look out onto the glittering Adriatic Sea, backed by cotton-candy-pink sunsets.

A short boat ride from Hvar Town, Palmizana Hotel finds itself burrowed in the greenest of greenery; it’s surrounded by densely planted pines, palms, cacti and citrus trees. Plus, there’s a sheltered cove with pebble beach and sun loungers. The continual scent of the surrounding lavender, sage, rosemary and mint make you feel as though you’re in a spa 24/7, making stress impossible. Interiors are colourful and eccentric, embellished with quirky paintings and unique sculptures by contemporary Croatian artists taken from the owner’s own renowned art collection. Palmizana’s six bungalows and six villas are each decorated around a singular colour and, while you shouldn’t expect a butler and tiny chocolate on your pillow, you’ll be more than comfortable and well looked after.

Glossy buildings and slick lobbies dominate most of this Croatian isle but Little Green Bay adopts a more barefoot, sandy hair sort of luxury. Nestled between the emerald-green pine forests and the azure sea of Lozna Bay, the boutique hotel consists of only 15 rooms. As an old farmhouse, Little Green Bay has stayed true to its rustic roots, opting for an earthy decor; duck-egg green and warm siennas complement natural materials such as linen and beech. Suites offer a covered sea-view terrace with rattan sunbeds and an outdoor bath that’s well worth the extra cost. The hotel’s private beach is beautiful but pebbled, so be sure to pack a pair of appropriate shoes. Dotted with sunbeds and jumbo bean bags and backed by tamarisk trees and pines, the stretch of shore is small but mighty.
