Johannesburg's name seems to be tainted by stories of crime and decay, and is always overshadowed by its sibling Cape Town. But Joburg has an energy that its sleepy sister lacks. It is a much more integrated city than Cape Town, and a sense of unity prevails amongst residents. Each suburb and district has its own unique quality, which friendly residents are proud to reveal. There is so much to see and do that you will do not regret spending a few nights in this incredible city.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • To get anywhere in Johannesburg, be prepared to drive or be driven. Unless you know the city, use taxis and ubers where possible, especially at night. Taxis are not cheap.
  • You can walk comfortably around Braamfontein and Maboneng, and the parks and main streets in the suburbs, but stay vigilant.
  • Despite the city's high crime rate, get out of the suburbs and go explore all the great places Downtown.
