Where to Drink in El Nido, The Philippines

Palawan Island, in the western Philippines, has long been a secluded enclave for nomads and nature-seekers. Now, a cohort of Filipinos is striving to preserve its eclectic biodiversity and low-key ambience by combining back-to-nature experiences with community initiatives. In partnership with Corona, our #ThisIsLiving guide takes you into the off-grid wilderness of this Filipino paradise.

Angkla El Nido Beach Club

El Nido isn’t the place to visit if you’re looking for a hectic nightlife: things around here are more low-key, laid-back and slow-paced. If you’re looking for a party, you’ll have to make tracks down some rough-and-ready roads to Angkla El Nido, a resort and beach club that sees out sunsets in true El Nido-style. This is carefree living at its best: think disco beats, fruity cocktails in happy hour, barefoot dancing in the sand and a beachful of deckchairs to lounge in as you plot tomorrow’s adventures, bottle of Corona in hand. When Sunday comes, head back for their hangover cure – a slow-paced pool party with a Filipino take on a Bloody Mary.

LICK El Nido

Head feeling a little heavy? Need something to blow the cobwebs away after a night spent dancing on the beach? Head to this specialist coffee roastery and advocate for the Philippines’ incredible native beans for a cup of the strong stuff. Focused on single-origin Filipino coffees, Silvester Dan Samonte and his team work closely with local farmers and cooperatives to produce killer brews that encapsulate the unique character of local coffee. You’ll see the brand in cafés all over Palawan, but the best place to recharge is at the glass-fronted roastery in El Nido. Head down on a Wednesday morning to take part in a tasting session or pick up a bag of beans and swap that morning frappuccino you pick up en route to the office for a single-origin iced coffee when back home.

Sunset Beach Club

Sunsets in Palawan are of the jaw-dropping kind: an eclectic tie-dye sky of plum-coloured stratospheres blending into peachy corals and ochre oranges. This kind of natural beauty calls for a suitable theatre from which to sky-watch. Step in the Sunset bar at Panorama Resort El Nido. Under the soft glow of rattan lamps strung between palms, grab one of the beds bordering the waves and watch the sun sink beneath the ragged island silhouettes that frame the horizon. A little way out of El Nido, it’s a great way to experience Palawan’s raw natural beauty.
