restaurant

Sunset Bamboo

The name says it all. In this good-life café, the only daily grind that matters is the one on its speciality coffee. Health-meets-comfort-food menus wouldn’t look out of place in Melbourne, with rainbow smoothies, stuffed tacos and jammy eggs running off rye. Vegan energy balls are on the counter, of course. Pick one up as you browse its eco-friendly lifestyle store. Like this? Try Dear Rose Café – lots of wicker, açaí and fat cinnamon buns – or plant-centric Green is Good. Watermelon juice and the Happy Bowl is a strong order. Extra halloumi.

restaurant

Nalu Bowls

It’s not just Ericeira’s waves that could be straight out of Bali. Served from a clapboard shack, Nalu Bowls’ tropical smoothies are a mouthful of sunshine and a brilliant beachside snack. Expect hollowed-out coconut shells decorated with mango roses, dragon fruit and a liberal sprinkling of granola. Names inspired by surfing culture wash up on its menu, including the Pipeline, Coxos and Uluwatu. A feel-good alternative to Portugal’s typically meat-heavy menus.

restaurant

Balagan

After its summer pop-up in 2020 was a hit with locals, Balagan has channelled its energy into opening a brick-and-mortar location. We recommend following these guys on social – not just to keep tabs on that new address, but to drool over its bright, Middle Eastern-style dishes fashioned out of local Portuguese produce. Think Persian pomegranate and walnut stew, popcorn falafel (our favourite) and chocolate-tahini ice cream. Takeaway mezze makes great picnic fodder with a few cervezas.
