The River House
Fromians know a thing or two when it comes to hanging about in cafés, so it’s testament to the low-waste River House that many of them choose to brunch, lunch and sink a few cocktails here. Set on the bridge above the River Frome and run by a self-proclaimed “small gaggle of coffee-crazed, brunch-boshing, lunch-loving, café fanatics”, this spot is where we like to drop in for a rainbow of beetroot-and-sweetcorn fritters stacked with carrot houmous, greens and halloumi, along with a cup of house-roasted Loud Mouth Coffee.
restaurant
Rye Bakery
This bakery-grocery-café hybrid is Frome’s definitive spot for handcrafted pastries, baked goods and all things flour – sustainably sourced and freshly milled, of course. Set in a split-level, revamped church it’s a go-to for fat, flaky croissants and (on Friday nights) sourdough pizzas decorated with local, seasonal ingredients. Pick up one of its delightfully tangy, naturally leavened loaves to take home.
restaurant
Bistro Lotte
At the heart of town, this laid-back French bistro makes a great pit-stop for those dipping in and out of Catherine Hill’s shops and in need of moules frites and carafe of European wine to keep them going. You’ll notice “23 Grocery & Provision Stores” emblazoned in whimsical tiling as you approach – the building was an Edwardian grocers before its current incarnation. As dusk falls, Bistro Lotte transforms into a candlelit snug heady with the aroma of boeuf bourguignon and coq au vin. Too full to move? Roll into one of its understated-retro guestrooms upstairs.
