Where to Shop in the Isles of Scilly

Scilly Flowers

The island’s very own postal flower service in Churchtown, St Martin’s. High on the hill with panoramic sea views on either side, Scilly Flowers delivers all over the UK. It seems appropriate to have a postal flower service in a place that pays the Duchy a daffodil a year to rent 60 per cent of its land (yes really!). Before tourism took off, flowers were the islands’ prime source of income. During the Second World War, Winston Churchill granted the islanders permission to continue growing their scented narcissi, some of which was still exported to the mainland, in exchange for coupons to cheer up the public.

Scilly Succulents

If mail-order flowers aren’t enough for you, you can also get succulents shipped straight to your door here. The Isles of Scilly lie right in the middle of the Gulf Stream meaning that the islands have a mild climate all year round and rarely get any frost, perfect for soft succulents.

Pop-up shops

The Isles of Scilly are effectively one big, open-air market. It’s impossible to turn a corner without passing a pop-up stall erected at the corner of someone’s drive. A walk around the islands can have you returning home with all kinds of goodies, from homegrown asparagus to second-hand books.

Scilly Spirit Distillery

For a small place, Scilly certainly produces an impressive amount of booze. Nestled on a quiet street in the centre of St Mary’s is the island’s very own gin distillery. As well as tours and tastings they also run classes. Gin school sounds much more fun to us than double maths.

49 Degrees

Did you even visit the Scilly Isles if you didn’t get the stash? The signature IoS crossed oars are practically a uniform here, so don’t even think about boarding the Scillonian home if you’re not decked out in an IoS t-shirt, sweater and baseball cap.
