Les Halles Paul Bocuse

Lyon, France

Lyon’s superb indoor food market offers an unforgettable experience for all the senses at once. Locals come here on weekend mornings before lunch to meet, eat, drink and buy their groceries. We recommend kicking things off with some Brittany oysters and white wine at Chez Antonin, before paying a visit to Bruno Bluntzer at Sibilia for a selection of Lyon’s finest meat and high-end charcuteries.

Visit Fourvière & Vieux Lyon (or Les Pentes & Croix Rousse)

Lyon, France

No visit to Lyon would be complete without looking out over the city from the stunning Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. The hike up takes you through the Old Town, via a series of staircases and steep hills. If the walk to the top of Fourvière hill is too challenging, another option is to take a taxi up and walk down. For a more alternative bird’s-eye view of Lyon, visit the Les Pentes area – a series of mainly pedestrianised streets, situated between the fourth and first districts – full of designer shops and charming cafés. Climb to the very top of Montée de la Grande Cöte to see the spectacular views from Place de la Croix Rousse.

Halles Paul Bocuse

Although not a restaurant per se, Lyon's prestigious indoor food market is a must for any visiting gastronome. With some 60 independent vendors selling the finest regional market produce, from cheese to oysters and local wines, this is an absolute must. "Les Halles Paul Bocuse is not to be missed. I recommend oysters with a glass of wine, especially a weekend morning around 11AM. Buying produce from Charcuterie Sibillia and fromagerie Mère Richard is also a delight - make sure you ask for vacuum packing if you're going to transport it."
