Where to Drink in Frome, Somerset

bar

Moo and Too

Stomping around Catherine Hill is no easy feat; fuel up at Moo and Too. Here, loose-leaf teas are sourced directly from growers in South India (owner Euan Barker visits the plantations each year to chat with the pickers and experiment with flavours), while single-origin coffee comes from Frome’s Round Hill Roastery. Want milk with that? It’s straight from the Jersey cows at nearby Ivy House Farm. Snagging a bag of the Green Keralan tea to take home is our favourite sort of souvenir.

bar

Eight Stony Street

This award-winning independent wine bar and merchant stocks more than 400 bottles, chiefly of the organic and biodynamic variety. In the name of sustainability, 10 labels are on tap and available to take home in refillable bottles. Oenophiles might want to check ahead for its line-up of tastings and masterclasses, but we’re more than happy hunkering down with a glass of Dorset cremant and a sharing board of West Country charcuterie. The wood-fired pizza is very good here too.

bar

Palmer Street Bottle

UK-made craft beers and small-batch wines and spirits are paired with artisan organic cheese at this tap bar. Find a perch on the raw-wood banquet to wash down a three-cheese board with Vault City Brewing’s fruity Rybena Sour or avail of the bottle shop and refill station to pack up a picnic for walks in the Mendip Hills.

bar

The Three Swans

One of Frome’s oldest boozers run by one of Frome’s youngest landladies, The Three Swans punches well above its half-pint size when it comes to eclectic character. Its quaint courtyard is pleasant on a summer’s evening, but this place really comes into its own on grey days – pull out a board game and order a couple of its stellar scotch eggs.
