Sennerei Hatzenstädt

Is there any better dinner party brag than serving a smorgasbord of small-batch production Tirolean cheeses you’ve picked up on your latest jaunt? With that in mind, take a culinary tour of Kufstein’s award-winning dairy farms by visiting Sennerei Hatzenstädt, the valley’s go-to for speciality regional cheeses. Most of the smoky roundels and herby wedges sold here are only distributed within the confines of the Tirol, so be sure you don’t scrimp on samples.

Crownhill Distillery

While Austrian beer is world-class, you can’t leave the Tirol without a suitcase laden with schnapps. Rather than traversing the peaks and troughs of the Kaiser Mountains (there are over 4,000 Tirolean distilleries to work through), head out to the Crownhill Distillery to discover an edit of the region’s best. You’ll also find whisky, gin and aronia liquor, which is made from the suspiciously named “chokeberry”, plucked straight off the trees in Styria to the south.

Erbhof Anis

If you’re a regular at your local farmer’s market, you’ll swoon at Kufstein’s organic offering. While you’ll find a kaleidoscopic array of grocery stores in the town centre, the really good stuff is at Erbhof Anis in the neighbouring municipality of Schwoich. Be sure to arrive armed with a couple of empty totes – you’ll need them to lug home all the jams, dried herbs and locally distilled liquors.
