Cerro San Bernardo
Salta, Argentina
If you’re feeling relatively spry, climb the thousand-plus steps from behind the Museo de Antropología that lead to the Cerro San Bernardo, Salta’s picturesque viewing point. Once atop, enjoy the panorama over the whole city and the surrounding mountains. Those who are less actively inclined can take the eight-minute cable car ride from Parque San Martin. Before heading back down, stop off in the small landscaped garden for a rest.

Cafayate
Salta, Argentina
After a scenic 183km drive from Salta, you will find yourself at the centre of the area’s thriving wine industry. Cafayate itself is pretty, but the vineyards in the surrounding Calchaquí Valley are the real draw. The high altitude makes for distinctive wines, which are becoming increasingly renowned both inside of Argentina and further afield. Torrontes is the flagship product here, though the winemakers excel with other grapes including Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier.
