Since the rumours of a Sex and the City revival began to swirl, back in January, we've been glued to the web, waiting for a first glimpse. Now, finally, it's happening. After a decade spent rewatching and reminiscing, we have brand-new episodes to watch, because the girls are back in town. Enter Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York-Goldenblatt - minus, alas, Samantha Jones. But the show must go on.

New York is a city that has us forever in her buzzy thrall. We couldn't help but bask in the inevitable SATC extravaganza and spotlight some of the coolest locations the Big Apple has to offer. Follow along as we dive into the restaurants, museums and bars that have us tempted to book a one-way ticket Stateside.

Behind the scenes: nine dreamy destinations behind Sex and the City's 2021 revival

restaurant

The East Pole

The clean, minimal vibe of Upper East Side neighbourhood favourite The East Pole extends to its farm-to-table menu. We strongly suggest grabbing a plate of the flavour-packed beetroot and walnut hummus, served with crudités and house-made flatbread. It's hardly surprising that the decor here is just as spectacular as the dishes: picture azure-coloured leather booths, low ceilings and naked light bulbs. FYI: The East Pole Manhattan cocktail is rumoured to be Carrie's go-to.

Sant Ambroeus

Milan meets Madison Avenue at the Lower East Side outpost of this acclaimed restaurant chain. Handmade rigatoni, grilled artichokes and authentic risotto are the main attractions, but we also recommend the roast lamb chops and tender chicken thighs, which are super-fresh and come accompanied by crispy potatoes and a smattering of garden herbs. Take your time over the dessert menu, which is famous for its mouth-watering creations. Sweet tooth? You'll love the lemon sponge and chocolate mousse. Pro tip: don't visit without sampling some choice bins from the seriously well-curated wine list.

Whitney Museum of American Art

Famed for its glass-covered facade, the Whitney Museum of American Art is impossible to miss. Housing 4,645sq m of gallery space, the museum's white-washed walls heave with artworks by the likes of Warhol, Avedon and Basquiat. To avoid the crowds, you'll want to visit early on a midweek morning, if possible. Before leaving, head to the Whitney's top-floor terrace for incredible 360-degree vistas across the city. Insider's tip: there's also a theatre, library and four outdoor exhibition areas to wander through - check the website in advance to plan your perfect visit.

Central Park

One of the world's most famous urban green spaces, Central Park is home to 340 hectares of man-made gardens, meadows and forests. Swerve the swamped sidewalks and make a beeline for Conservatory Water. Here, you'll find the seasonal and rather famous pond from EB White's legendary novel Stuart Little - be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the longboat model races. On the hunt for a picnic spot? Check out Sheep Meadow and Great Lawn.

restaurant

Balthazar

Stepping inside Balthazar is like teleporting to a fancy French bistro. Interiors marry traditional Parisian touches with contemporary comforts: think floor-to-ceiling mahogany shelves heaving with house wines and walls that shimmer with dramatic antique mirrors. Start by ordering the silky onion soup, before working your way through the steak frites and ending with a plate of creamy profiteroles, all washed down with a hearty glass of bordeaux. It's also worth noting that Balthazar serves one of the best brunches in New York City.

Eleven Madison Park

A World's 50 Best Restaurants regular chart-topper, it's no secret that this place has amassed a bunch of awards. Now, the post-lockdown Eleven Madison Park is back, and better than ever, albeit with a major twist: a plant-based menu. Head chef Daniel Humm is championing the sustainability angle, and we're certainly not complaining. Be prepared to splurge and order a selection of starters for your group. Make sure to include the vegan caviar and the tomato and coriander eggplant. If, like us, you're trying to behave yourself, suppress the cocktail cravings with one of the insanely flavoursome non-alcoholic pours.

Monkey Bar

If there's one place that perfectly embodies the go-slow jazz scene of New York, it's the Hotel Elysee-housed Monkey Bar. This cool and cosy bolthole serves up colourful chopped salads, massive lobsters, legendary potato gnocchi, and ice-cream sandwiches overflowing with peanut butter. Be sure to check out the well-stocked, Eighties-style bar, which sends out expertly crafted creations such as the Monkey Gland - a fruity cocktail concocted with gin, pomegranate molasses and orange bitters. Each table is framed by mirrored beams and monkey murals. If it's good enough for our favourite girl gang, it's good enough for us.
